(No) Reflections on a Catfish

I have had glasses now for 6 years. In that time, for one reason or another I had never bothered to get prescription sunglasses and to be honest I don’t know why. Prior to my needing prescription glasses I had always worn polarized sunglasses especially on and around water. You can just see much better with them because they really cut any glare. My prescription is not that strong but I do need correction for both far and near. Because I can not stand having anything appear blurry I wear my glasses constantly and not having prescription sunglasses I have spent the last 6 years with basically no sunglasses. National Nurse Anesthetist Week

mg_9840_0 This week, January 22 through January 28 is National Nurse Anesthetists Week.

National Nurse Anesthetists Week is a yearly celebration occurring in the last full week in January. It began in 1999 and this year, 2012, will mark its 13th year. This year’s theme is “Quality and Excellence in Anesthesia Care.”

From the AANA website, “Established by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), National Nurse Anesthetists Week was created to encourage CRNAs [Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists] to take the opportunity to educate the public about anesthesia safety, questions to ask prior to undergoing surgery, and the benefits of receiving anesthesia care from nurse anesthetists” (AANA). HCC Digital Competition Night

Last evening the Harrisburg Camera Club held it’s second Digital Image Competition for the 2011-2012 club year. There was a total of 30 images that were previously provided to three judges for review and scoring.  After a brief preview of all of the images the scores were revealed and the judges critiqued each individual image. My image, titled, The Last Leaves, received a score of 45 out of 60. Generally, all three judges liked the image. Two of the judges suggested that the image may look better if the section of tree in the lower right hand corner had been cropped out. Much to my delight, the third judge remarked, “This looks like an image that you would see in National Geographic.” Wow ….. needless to say this made my year…!! Here is the image I submitted along with a “cropped” version. Let me know what you think.

Mt. Washington, Pittsburgh, PA

After spending much of the day photographing in Wheeling, West Virginia and Bellaire, Ohio my camera club friend Tom and I decided to head back home, west towards Harrisburg. Our plan was to detour to Pittsburgh and try to make it there just before sun down so we could photograph the city from the top of Mt. Washington. Our journey was on schedule until we decided to stop in Triadelphia, WV, to grab a bite to eat at the local Applebee’s. Even though it was Black Friday the restaurant was not that busy. We managed to get seated right away and our waitress took our order after a short look at the menu. And then…. it took forever to get our food. Tom had a chicken dish and I had a salad. Nothing extravagant, but it took a long time to come out of the kitchen. Continue reading »

Bridges In Bellaire, Ohio

Upon leaving the Mount Wood Cemetery (Mount Wood Revisited) above Wheeling, West Virginia my camera club friend Tom and I crossed the Ohio river and traveled about 5 miles south on Route 7 to the town of Bellaire, Ohio. We had learned previously, from another friend, Randal, that Bellaire was home to one of the railroad bridges featured in the movie The Unstoppable. Continue reading »

Mount Wood Revisited

This past Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, my friend Tom and I made a return trip to the Mount Wood Cemetery and Overlook in Wheeling, West Virginia. We left Carlisle at 6:00AM and arrived at the overlook at 9:30AM. We photographed at the overlook and then the cemetery until about 2:00PM. On the return trip we visited Bellaire, Ohio, home to several old bridges that have appeared in recent movies and then on to Pittsburgh to photograph the city skyline. We arrived back in Carlisle at about 10:00PM. It was a long day for sure, but the weather was beautiful and we got some unusual, controversial, and perhaps once in a lifetime photographs. Mount Wood – Wheeling, West Virginia

Mount Wood CemeteryAbout two weeks ago I was traveling back to Harrisburg from Columbus, Ohio along interstate route 70. Before leaving Ohio behind, I stopped for lunch at the Panera in the Ohio Valley Mall.  While surfing the net and eating I discovered some images from the Mount Wood Overlook in nearby Wheeling, West Virginia. Always on the look out for photo op’s I decided to stop off in Wheeling to explore this site. After all it was on the way and only about 10 miles from the Panera. Continue reading »

October Snow

This weekend was the weekend we had scheduled to close down the cottage for the winter. We have to pack up and take home anything that can freeze and then I drain down the water and freeze proof all the drain traps. It takes about 4 hours or so to get it all done. Of course we have to make time to fit in a record breaking October snowfall. Continue reading »
